Setting Expectations

2023 is finally here. Can you all believe that it has been 23 years since Y2K? Of all the memories of my childhood, that was one that sticks out very vividly. Not merely because we were entering into a new millennium, but for the expectations that were set surrounding the event.

For those of you who were not around during the final months of 1999 there was a great expectation set that when the clock struck midnight to the year 2000 that computers and technology as we knew it would be left in disarray and disaster. What a horrible way to set up an entire society for something that should have been so exciting, a whole new millennium! But how are we setting ourselves up for this new year in the same way? Are we clinging to fear of what could possibly happen, or are we joyfully awaiting all the goodness this year holds ahead?

Perhaps this year instead of allowing worry to occupy the greatest spaces in your brain you could make the goal to expect resolution, cups of hope, and adventure. When we enter into new situations or years with the expectation of something good, we will eventually find and see the good in just about anything. So, don’t plaster stickers all over this year to shut down before midnight 1999, instead take on the spirit of, “I can’t wait to see what this year just might bring.”

Journal Pondering of the Week: If I could tell the me of January 1, 2022, a message, what would it be and why?
